Jones Carbon Project 8

Project Information:

Jones Carbon Project 8 is a soil carbon sequestration project situated in the fertile Arcadia Valley, approximately 70km north-east of Injune in the Central Highlands of Queensland. Registered on February 28, 2023, the project currently covers an area of 489.71 hectares. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a leading developer in the Australian soil carbon sector, and is part of a larger aggregation of "Jones" projects in the region.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This framework rewards landholders for increasing the amount of organic carbon stored in their soil compared to a baseline. To achieve this, the project involves specific land management activities, primarily altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing. These changes are designed to increase biomass, promote permanent vegetation cover, and improve soil health, which drives the drawdown of atmospheric carbon into the soil profile.

The Arcadia Valley is a premier beef-producing region known for its "Brigalow" soils. The area typically features cracking clay soils (Vertosols) which are highly fertile and capable of holding significant moisture, making them ideal for high-yield grazing and soil carbon sequestration. The climate is sub-tropical and semi-arid, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 630mm, which falls predominantly during the summer months.

In June 2024, the project underwent a formal variation to remove specific areas from the project boundary, a common administrative procedure to exclude non-compliant land or infrastructure (such as roads or dams) from the carbon estimation area. The region is also near Lake Nuga Nuga, a notable natural landmark within the Central Queensland sandstone belt.
