Hodges Carbon Project

Project Information:

Hodges Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Moira Shire of northern Victoria, approximately 25km north-east of the major regional centre of Shepparton. The project was registered on June 23, 2022, and covers a project area of 158.66 hectares.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models 2021 methodology. This method requires landholders to implement new management activities designed to increase carbon stocks within the soil profile. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices. Stubble is also retained after harvest to protect the soil structure and add organic matter.

The surrounding Goulburn Valley region is a significant agricultural hub known for mixed farming, dairying, and cropping. The landscape typically features flat riverine plains with red-brown earth soils (loams and clays) that are suitable for irrigation. The climate is temperate to semi-arid, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 400–550mm, often supplemented by the extensive irrigation infrastructure in the district.

Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd is the project proponent. As of late 2025, the project has successfully demonstrated sequestration, resulting in the issuance of 290 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). This early issuance is notable for soil carbon projects, which often require longer lead times to demonstrate measurable increases in soil organic carbon.
