Yerangatup "Prickle Farm"
ERF175337
Project Information:
Yerangatup "Prickle Farm" is an environmental planting project located in the locality of Yerangatup, approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Esperance in Western Australia. Registered in July 2022, the project covers roughly 28 hectares of land situated within the Esperance Sandplain, a region heavily utilised for mixed agriculture, including cereal cropping (wheat and barley) and sheep grazing. The project site sits within a transitional rainfall zone, receiving moderate annual rainfall typical of the south-eastern agricultural region (approximately 450–550mm), and is characterised by the sandy duplex soils and gravels common to the area.
Operated by The Tijuk Foundation Pty Ltd, the project employs the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology. This involves establishing permanent mixed-species plantings of native trees and shrubs on land previously used for agriculture for at least five years. The goal is to restore local vegetation cover, which sequesters carbon in the biomass of the trees as they grow. Notably, the property name "Prickle Farm" has historical ties to the local community; records suggest the Rotary Club of Esperance Bay has previously utilised a property of the same name for community fundraising and farming activities, highlighting the site's local significance beyond its carbon sequestration role.
