Cow Paddock Carbon + Biodiversity ID 1221
ERF175242
Project Information:
Cow Paddock Carbon + Biodiversity ID 1221 is an environmental planting project located approximately 15km southeast of Murgon in the South Burnett region of Queensland. Registered on August 6, 2022, the project covers a substantial area of 197.31 hectares. The proponent, James Heading Pastoral Pty Ltd, is a known entity in the region's agricultural sector, particularly associated with cattle grazing and the local peanut industry.
The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree and shrub species on land that was previously cleared for agriculture. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the planting must be established at a density sufficient to achieve "forest cover," defined as a potential height of at least 2 meters and canopy cover of at least 20%.
The South Burnett region is characterized by a sub-tropical climate with a long-term average rainfall of approximately 700-800mm. The area is renowned for its fertile red earth (kraznozems or ferrosols) and black clays, which support a diverse agricultural mix of beef cattle grazing and cropping, most notably peanuts and navy beans.
A key feature of this project is its participation in the Australian Government's Carbon + Biodiversity (C+B) Pilot, as indicated by the "ID 1221" designation in its title. This pilot scheme offers landholders financial incentives to plant diverse native vegetation that delivers both carbon sequestration (ACCUs) and biodiversity improvements. This dual-purpose approach ensures the restoration of local ecosystems while diversifying on-farm income streams.
