Guilfoyle Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Guilfoyle Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon project located in the Mallee region of Victoria, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the town of Wycheproof. Registered in September 2022, the project covers a project area of roughly 197 hectares within the Buloke Shire. The region is historically dominated by dryland broadacre cropping and grazing, characterized by flat plains and open agricultural landscapes.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for sequestering carbon in agricultural soils by implementing new management activities. For this specific project, the activities include converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices, retaining stubble after harvest to protect soil structure, and applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies. These changes are designed to boost plant growth and soil organic matter, thereby increasing the soil carbon stock over time.

Environmentally, the site sits within a semi-arid climatic zone, typically receiving annual rainfall around 350mm to 380mm, which can be variable. The soils in this part of the Mallee and Wimmera transition zone are generally Calcarosols (calcareous earths) or clay loams, which are fertile but can be prone to erosion if not carefully managed, hence the focus on stubble retention and reduced tillage. The project is managed by AgriProve Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon market known for facilitating projects that integrate regenerative practices into standard cropping operations.
