Glenorchy Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:

The Glenorchy Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a waste sector project located at the Jackson Street Waste Management Centre in Glenorchy, approximately 10km northwest of the Hobart CBD in Tasmania. Registered in July 2022, the project is operated by LMS Energy Pty Ltd and focuses on the capture and combustion of landfill gas generated by the decomposition of organic waste.

This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. Landfill gas projects involve the installation of wells and piping to extract methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from the landfill mass. By capturing this gas and combusting it in a generator, the project converts the methane into less harmful carbon dioxide while simultaneously producing renewable electricity. Reports indicate the facility has a generation capacity of approximately 1.4MW, which is exported to the local grid.

The Glenorchy region features a cool temperate maritime climate with moderate rainfall, typically ranging between 600mm and 800mm annually. The local landscape is characterized by urban and industrial land use nestled against the foothills of the Wellington Range, with soils generally consisting of clay loams and podzols derived from the area's sedimentary and dolerite geology. A notable development for the site occurred in late 2022, when a new landfill cell was opened to extend the facility's operational life by approximately ten years, ensuring continued feedstock for the gas capture system.
