Peacock Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Peacock Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the locality of Stratham, approximately 15 kilometers south of the major port city of Bunbury in Western Australia. Registered in August 2022, the project encompasses a project area of 62.52 hectares within the Shire of Capel. The surrounding region of the South West is a primary agricultural hub, heavily utilized for dairy farming, beef grazing, and horticulture due to its favorable climate.

Operating under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021, the project aims to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. This methodology requires the proponent to measure baseline soil carbon levels and then implement "eligible management activities" to boost soil health. For the Peacock Carbon Project, these activities involve applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, re-establishing pastures through seeding or cropping, and altering grazing intensity to promote vegetation cover.

The project is situated on the Swan Coastal Plain, an environment characterized by a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The rainfall in this area is generally classified as high relative to the rest of the state, supporting productive pasture systems. The soil types in this specific coastal pocket typically range from sandy loams to darker, more fertile loams suitable for intensive grazing, though they can be sandy given the proximity to the coast.
