Berinson Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Berinson Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Western Downs region of Queensland, approximately 30km west of the town of Miles. Registered in June 2022, the project covers a land area of 466 hectares. The location sits within the Brigalow Belt bioregion, an area historically significant for agricultural development, predominantly cattle grazing and broadacre cropping.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for measured increases in soil carbon stocks resulting from changes in management practices. Specific activities for this project include altering stocking rates to improve vegetation cover, applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, and rejuvenating pastures through seeding or pasture cropping. These activities are designed to increase biomass production, thereby drawing more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.

The environment in the Western Downs is typically semi-arid to sub-tropical, characterized by hot summers and mild winters with a summer-dominant rainfall averaging between 600mm and 650mm annually. The soils in this region, particularly west of Miles towards Drillham, are often fertile cracking clays (Vertosols) or texture-contrast soils (Chromosols), which have a high capacity for carbon storage when managed correctly. The "2" in the project name suggests it is part of a staged development or a second aggregation of land under the same ownership or management structure (Berinson).
