Project Information:

LANDARI AKD-2 NSW is a plantation forestry project located approximately 25km south of Bathurst in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. Registered in April 2022, the project covers a significant area of 1,334 hectares. The project is managed by Associated Kiln Driers Pty Ltd (AKD), one of Australia's largest softwood timber processors, having previously been registered under the name Landari Pty Ltd.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically focusing on the establishment of a new plantation forest (Schedule 1). This activity involves planting trees for commercial harvesting on land that has not held a plantation or native forest for at least seven years prior. By converting land, typically previously used for grazing or cropping, into a timber plantation, the project sequesters carbon in the growing trees and wood products while generating a renewable timber resource.

The region surrounding Bathurst and Oberon is a well-established forestry hub, supporting major softwood processing facilities. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and is primarily utilized for cattle and sheep grazing alongside extensive pine plantations. The area experiences a temperate climate with moderate to high rainfall, generally sufficient to support commercial forestry. Soils in this locality are typically classified as Chromosols (often Red or Brown), which feature a strong texture contrast between loamy topsoil and clay subsoil, making them suitable for both pastures and plantation timber.

An interesting note is that the proponent, AKD, operates a major sawmill in the nearby town of Oberon. This project likely serves a dual purpose: generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to offset emissions or generate revenue, and securing a future timber supply for their local processing operations.
