Grassby Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Grassby Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Northern Areas Council region of South Australia, approximately 15km northwest of the rural township of Jamestown and east of Laura. The project was registered on May 20, 2022, and covers an area of roughly 103 hectares.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology (2021). This method rewards landholders for implementing new management activities that increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. For this specific project, activities include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, establishing and maintaining new pasture on previously cropped or fallow land, and altering grazing intensity or duration to improve soil health and vegetation cover.

The surrounding Mid North region of South Australia is a well-established agricultural zone known for mixed farming, particularly cereal cropping (wheat and barley) and sheep grazing. The area typically experiences a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with winter-dominant rainfall, averaging between 350mm and 500mm annually. Soils in this locality are predominantly red-brown earths and calcareous loams, which are productive but require careful management to maintain organic matter levels, a core objective of this carbon project.

The proponent, Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd, is a major developer of soil carbon projects in Australia. This project is one of several similar initiatives in the South Australian grain belt, designed to integrate carbon farming with traditional agricultural production.
