Project Information:

Woy Woy Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a waste sector project located at the Woy Woy Waste Management Facility on Nagari Road, approximately 10km south of Gosford in the Central Coast region of New South Wales. Registered in June 2022, the project operates within a major municipal waste site surrounded by the bushland of Brisbane Water National Park and nearby residential areas. The region is characterised by a coastal climate with high annual rainfall and landscapes dominated by Hawkesbury Sandstone-derived sandy loams and clays, though the immediate project area is a heavily engineered landfill environment.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology incentivises the capture and combustion of methane, a potent greenhouse gas released by decomposing organic waste, to generate renewable electricity. Unlike simple flaring projects that merely burn off gas to reduce its environmental impact, this project utilises combustion engines to produce power that is exported to the grid, transforming a waste by-product into a productive resource.

LMS Energy Pty Ltd, a leading Australian bioenergy company, serves as the proponent and operates the gas collection and generation infrastructure at the Council-owned facility. The project involves upgrading and maintaining an existing gas collection system to manage emissions from both legacy and non-legacy waste. Historical reports indicate the site has utilised a 1MW generator capable of powering over 1,000 homes, significantly reducing the facility's carbon footprint. The project formally transitioned to the 2021 method to continue crediting its abatement activities, ensuring the long-term viability of renewable energy generation at the site.
