Woy Woy Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:
Woy Woy Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas electricity generation project located at the Woy Woy Waste Management Facility, approximately 80km north of Sydney in the Central Coast region of New South Wales. It was registered in June 2022 by LMS Energy Pty Ltd and covers the active landfill footprint. The surrounding Woy Woy region features a mix of residential areas, recreational waterways, and large expanses of protected bushland, with over half the local area zoned for nature conservation like the nearby Brisbane Water National Park.
Electricity generation from landfill gas projects involve upgrading or installing collection systems to capture the methane-rich biogas emitted by decomposing organic waste in landfills. The captured methane is then combusted to generate electricity, preventing the potent greenhouse gas from venting into the atmosphere while producing renewable power. Under this methodology, standard requirements dictate that the amount of methane destroyed is calculated based on the measured energy content of the landfill gas sent to the combustion device.
The Central Coast environment is characterised by a coastal, high-rainfall climate. The local soils across the peninsula range from coastal sands around the beaches and waterways to shallow sandstone-derived soils and clays in the nearby forested national parks.
The Woy Woy Waste Management Facility has been operating since 1974 and receives around 85,000 tonnes of waste annually, acting as the primary solid waste hub for the southern Central Coast community. This carbon project upgrades an existing collection system to capture and combust gas generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste at the site. On February 21, 2024, the project underwent a method variation, moving from the older 2015 Landfill Gas methodology to the 2021 Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas determination. Furthermore, the project secured a carbon abatement contract with the Commonwealth at the March 2023 auction to deliver 58,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) over a 7-year delivery period.
