Project Information:
Milford Carbon + Diversity Project ID 1182 Tasmania is an environmental planting project located at the historic "Milford" property in Conara, approximately 15km north of Campbell Town and 50km south of Launceston in Tasmania. Registered in March 2022, the project covers a significant area of 1,396.88 hectares. The surrounding Northern Midlands region is a major agricultural hub, traditionally utilized for extensive grazing (sheep and cattle) and cropping, with the property itself historically wintering thousands of livestock and featuring frontage to the South Esk River.
The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology, which involves establishing permanent native vegetation on land previously cleared for agriculture. Specifically, this project is part of the Australian Government's Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot (Round 1), as indicated by the "Carbon + Diversity" title and "ID 1182" designation. This pilot stream rewards farmers for planting mixed-species native trees and shrubs that meet strict biodiversity protocols, in addition to generating carbon credits. The planting likely consists of species endemic to the local Midlands area, intended to restore canopy cover and create wildlife corridors.
Environmentally, the Conara region sits within the Tasmanian Midlands' "rain shadow," characterized by a dry sub-humid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 550mm, relatively low for Tasmania. The landscape is defined by flat to undulating plains with soils that are generally diverse, ranging from fertile alluvial loams near the river flats to sandy sodosols and clays in the broader grazing areas. The "Milford" property itself is listed on the Register of the National Estate, recognized for its historic significance in the region's pastoral development.
