Project Information:

Inkerman - Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas project located at the Inkerman Landfill, approximately 85km northwest of Adelaide and 15km southeast of Port Wakefield in South Australia. Registered in June 2022, the project is operated by Waste Management Pacific (S.A.) Pty Limited, a subsidiary of Australia's largest waste management company, Cleanaway. The project area covers the specific operational footprint of the landfill facility, which serves as a primary waste disposal site for the northern Adelaide metropolitan area.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. Landfill gas projects generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas released during the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste, and combusting it. This process converts the methane into carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower global warming potential. As a "transitioning" and "upgrade" project, this initiative specifically involves improving the efficiency of an existing gas collection system (for example, by installing new extraction wells or upgrading flaring infrastructure) to capture gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste that would have otherwise escaped into the atmosphere.

The Inkerman region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with relatively low rainfall. The surrounding landscape is dominated by broadacre farming and agriculture. The local environment features rolling dunes and soils that are typically calcareous sandy loams, common in this part of the Wakefield Regional Council area. The landfill itself is a significant infrastructure asset, licensed to receive hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste annually, including domestic, construction, and commercial waste streams.
