Inkerman - Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:

Inkerman - Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas project located at Inkerman, approximately 85km northwest of Adelaide in South Australia. It was registered in June 2022 and, while the specific project area is unknown, it operates within a major state-planned landfill facility.

Landfill gas projects involve installing or upgrading a gas collection system to capture methane emitted by decomposing organic waste. The methodology requires the captured methane to be combusted, typically using a flare or electricity generator, which converts it into less potent carbon dioxide to reduce the facility's overall greenhouse gas emissions.

The surrounding Wakefield Regional Council area is known for productive agriculture, predominantly broadacre grain cropping and intensive animal farming. The local environment is considered semi-arid, experiencing an average annual rainfall of approximately 330mm. Soils in the area generally consist of sandy surface soils over an underlying layer of Hindmarsh clay.

This transitioning project upgrades an existing landfill gas collection system to capture and combust gas generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste. The site is operated by Cleanaway, trading as Waste Management Pacific (S.A.) Pty Limited. It is recognized as a state-of-the-art facility, having previously won the Landfill Excellence Award at the Waste Management Association of Australia awards for its containment, control systems, and engineering grades.
