Western Port Works Continuous Paint Line #2 (CPL2) Oven replacement Project

Western Port Works Continuous Paint Line #2 (CPL2) Oven replacement Project is an Industrial and commercial emissions reduction project located at Hastings, on the shores of Western Port Bay, southeast of Melbourne in Victoria. It was registered in November 2021 and transitioned to the updated 2021 methodology determination in June 2022. Because it is a specific facility upgrade, it does not have a traditional broadacre project area listed.

Industrial and commercial emissions reduction projects involve upgrading, replacing, or modifying existing equipment to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This specific methodology enables facilities to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by improving the energy efficiency of industrial systems, such as process heat, to significantly lower fuel emissions.

The Hastings area on the Mornington Peninsula is known for heavy industrial manufacturing, port operations, and surrounding semi-rural agriculture. The region experiences moderate to high rainfall, averaging over 800mm annually, and local soils generally include sandy loams, coastal clays, and grey dermosols.

This project involved replacing the over 50-year-old CPL2 ovens and an incinerator with modern equipment at the BlueScope Western Port facility, which has been operating since 1972 and is where COLORBOND® steel is manufactured. The new equipment reduces natural gas consumption by 78% per tonne of painted product and lowers overall greenhouse gas emissions by 18,000 tonnes of CO2-e per year. It also reduced carbon monoxide emissions by 94%, nitrogen oxides by 60%, and safely allowed for the removal of 70 tonnes of asbestos-containing refractory material. In early 2026, the facility's team was recognised with a BlueScope Environmental Award for this successful sustainability upgrade.
