Johnson Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Johnson Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Waratah-Wynyard region of North-West Tasmania, approximately 15km west of the town of Wynyard. Registered in January 2022, the project encompasses roughly 190 hectares of prime agricultural land situated near the Sisters Creek and Boat Harbour localities. The region is renowned for its intensive agriculture, particularly dairy and beef cattle grazing, supported by a cool-temperate climate and reliable, high rainfall.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology (2021). This framework allows landholders to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by changing land management practices to increase Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks. For this specific project, the primary activity involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil, thereby boosting plant growth and subsequent carbon capture. The local environment typically features fertile Ferrosols (red basaltic soils), which are well-suited to such sequestration activities due to their physical structure and capacity to hold organic matter.

Managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector, the project serves as a practical example of integrating carbon farming with traditional agronomy. By optimizing nutrient levels, the project aims to demonstrate that improving soil productivity can simultaneously yield verifiable climate benefits.
