Johnson Carbon Project 1

Project Information:
Johnson Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon sequestration project located near Myalla, approximately 20km west of Wynyard in the productive North West region of Tasmania. The project was registered in January 2022 and covers an area of roughly 175 hectares.
The North West Coast of Tasmania is a renowned agricultural district, characterised by a cool-temperate climate and reliable, high rainfall (typically exceeding 1,000mm annually). The region is famous for its fertile Red Basalt soils (Ferrosols), which support intensive grazing for dairy and beef cattle, as well as high-yield cropping. This project specifically involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material soil deficiencies, a "new activity" designed to boost pasture biomass and, consequently, soil organic carbon levels.
Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, the project aims to sequester carbon by changing land management practices. The methodology requires baseline soil sampling to measure existing carbon stocks, followed by the implementation of new activities, in this case, nutrient application, to increase those stocks over time. Credits are issued based on measured increases in soil carbon relative to the baseline.
The project is managed by Agriprove, a prominent soil carbon project developer in Australia. Agriprove typically utilizes a "digital twin" model and high-frequency soil sampling to monitor carbon fluctuations. While "Johnson" likely refers to the landholder family, the project fits the profile of Agriprove’s aggregation model, where individual farm properties are registered as standalone projects to participate in the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) scheme.
