O'Sullivan Carbon Project

Project Information:

The O'Sullivan Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in Burramine, Victoria, approximately 10 kilometers west of the major town of Yarrawonga. Registered in November 2021, the project covers a land area of roughly 295 hectares. The property sits within the Moira Shire local government area, a region characterized by the riverine plains of the Murray River.

The project operates under the Carbon Farming Initiative - Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology (2018). This method requires landholders to implement new management activities designed to increase soil organic carbon stocks over time. Unlike estimation-based models, this methodology relies on physical soil sampling to measure baseline carbon levels and subsequent increases, rewarding the project with Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for the verified sequestration.

The Burramine and Yarrawonga region typically supports mixed farming operations, including dryland and irrigated cropping, as well as sheep and cattle grazing. The environment is classified as temperate to semi-arid, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 480mm. The soils in this area are generally described as red-brown earths, loams, and clays, which are productive for agriculture but often require careful management to maintain structure and nutrient levels.

To drive carbon increases, the project has undertaken specific activities including altering grazing intensity, applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, and rejuvenating pastures through seeding. The project is managed by Agriprove, a prominent soil carbon project developer known for utilizing multi-species pasture systems and advanced soil testing technology to optimize carbon yields.
