Courtice Carbon Project 3

Project Information:

Courtice Carbon Project 3 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, approximately 50km north of the major regional centre of Bordertown. Registered on November 1, 2021, the project covers a land area of 231 hectares. The region, situated near the South Australian-Victorian border, is a well-established agricultural zone primarily utilized for mixed farming, including broadacre cropping and livestock grazing (sheep and cattle).

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems) Methodology Determination 2018. This methodology allows landholders to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by changing land management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, establishing and maintaining new pastures on land that was previously cropped or fallow, and altering grazing intensity or duration to promote soil health.

Environmentally, the Tatiara District (an Aboriginal word meaning "Good Country") is characterized by a semi-arid to temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450mm. The local terrain typically features sandy loams over clay or shallow soils sitting atop limestone (calcrete), which are common in the Upper South East and Mallee regions. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent soil carbon project developer in Australia, and is one of multiple projects (including "Courtice Carbon Project 4") associated with the same landholding entity in the area.
