Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site #22

Project Information:
Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site #22 is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Upper Gascoyne region of Western Australia, approximately 350km east of Carnarvon near Mount Augustus. It was registered in February 2022 and covers 346,395ha.
Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve establishing permanent, even-aged native forests on land where natural vegetation regrowth has been actively suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project's commencement. Under this methodology, the land naturally regenerates using in-situ seed sources, such as existing rootstock and lignotubers, once the suppression factors are removed.
The Upper Gascoyne and wider WA rangelands are traditionally known for expansive pastoral land use, primarily sheep and cattle grazing, alongside mining exploration. The area is considered an arid to semi-arid environment characterized by low and highly variable rainfall. Soils across the region reflect typical rangeland profiles and are generally dominated by red sandy earths, shallow loams, and extensive red-brown hardpan plains.
This project facilitates the regeneration of native woodlands by actively managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing, as well as humanely controlling feral animal populations to remove grazing pressure. The project is operated by Terra Carbon Pty Limited, a prominent project proponent acting as a subsidiary of the GreenCollar Group. An interesting note about this specific site is that a formal project variation was recorded on December 19, 2025, in which specific areas were removed from the project boundaries. This was likely done to refine the carbon estimation areas and ensure strict, ongoing compliance with the HIR methodology requirements.
