Project Information:

Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site #22 is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located in the Upper Gascoyne region of Western Australia, approximately 40km northeast of Mount Augustus and 115km southwest of Paraburdoo. It was registered in February 2022 and originally covered a massive 346,395.27 hectares, though a variation on December 19, 2025, saw certain areas removed from the project's boundaries.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects establish permanent native forests by promoting the assisted regeneration of native trees from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers. This methodology is strictly applied to land that was previously cleared of vegetation and where regrowth has been suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project commencing. Standard requirements for this methodology involve ceasing the suppressive activities, in this case, through the active management of the timing and extent of livestock grazing, as well as the humane management of feral animals.

The Upper Gascoyne region is known for vast, sparsely vegetated pastoral stations primarily used for extensive sheep and cattle grazing operations. The environment is classified as semi-arid to arid, experiencing low and highly variable rainfall. The typical soils found across this area consist of red sandy loams, deep sandy duplexes, and alluvial flats along the river systems.

Terra Carbon Pty Limited, a subsidiary and trading name of major Australian environmental market developer GreenCollar, is the proponent for this site. This specific project forms part of a much larger aggregation of conservation initiatives spread across the Western Australian rangelands, designed to restore degraded vegetation while providing an alternative carbon income stream to local landholders.
