Project Information:
Engaged Carbon is a Land and Sea Transport project managed by Engage Marine Pty Ltd, which is headquartered in Perth, Western Australia. Registered in January 2022, the project operates not on a specific parcel of land, but across Engage Marine's fleet of vessels stationed at various Australian ports, including Dampier, Whyalla, Abbot Point, and Sydney.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Land and Sea Transport) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology awards carbon credits for reducing the emissions intensity of transportation services, effectively consuming less fuel per unit of work. Engage Carbon specifically focuses on a "group of vehicles" consisting of marine tugs and support vessels. The project activities involve changing operational practices, such as optimizing vessel speeds, improving towage scheduling, and utilizing real-time data to minimize fuel consumption during port operations.
As this is a maritime logistics initiative, traditional environmental metrics such as soil type and rainfall are not applicable. The operational environment is the coastal maritime zone of major Australian industrial ports. Engage Marine has highlighted this initiative as a key component of their Pathway to Carbon Neutrality and claims to be the first towage company in Australia to have an emissions reduction project of this nature accepted by the Clean Energy Regulator.
