McKenna Carbon Project

Project Information:

The McKenna Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the South Burnett region of Queensland, approximately 60km west of the major agricultural town of Kingaroy. Registered in January 2022, the project covers 313 hectares of agricultural land. The surrounding region is widely recognized for its diverse mixed farming, including cattle grazing and cropping, supported by a sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method allows landholders to earn carbon credits by measuring increases in soil organic carbon compared to a baseline. To achieve this, the project employs a combination of activities designed to boost soil health and vegetation cover. These include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, re-establishing pastures through seeding (often using multi-species mixes to improve biodiversity), and altering grazing intensity or duration to allow for better pasture recovery.

Agriprove Solutions Co No.1 Pty Ltd serves as the proponent, a subsidiary of Agriprove, which is a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon market. The South Burnett region is particularly notable for its "Red Earth" (ferrosol) soils, which are highly valued for agriculture, though the specific project site likely utilizes these fertile conditions to support high-density grazing strategies aimed at sequestering carbon deep in the soil profile.
