Project Information:

2022 C+B Planting program is a permanent environmental planting project located at the historic "Dalness" property near Evandale, approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Launceston in Tasmania. Registered in December 2021, the project covers roughly 55 hectares of land previously used for agricultural production. The "C+B" in the project title indicates its participation in the Australian Government's Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot, a stewardship program designed to reward farmers for increasing on-farm biodiversity alongside carbon sequestration.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology. This framework requires the establishment of mixed-species trees and shrubs native to the local area on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least five years. Unlike plantation forestry, these plantings are permanent and not intended for harvest. As a FullCAM project, carbon abatement is modelled based on the specific growth potential of the site and the species planted, rather than through direct physical measurement of every tree.

The Northern Midlands region surrounding Evandale is a significant agricultural hub, characterized by a cool temperate climate and average annual rainfall between 600mm and 800mm. The landscape typically features fertile soils, ranging from clay loams on alluvial flats to iron-rich ferrosols derived from volcanic basalt, which support intensive cropping and livestock grazing.

Dalness Farming Pty Ltd, managed by the Randall family, runs a diverse commercial operation on the property, including vineyards and Australia's only commercial herd of English Longhorn cattle. This carbon project is integrated into the broader farm management strategy, likely serving as biodiversity corridors or shelterbelts that improve animal welfare and landscape health while generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
