RegenCo BCHM Northern Aggregation #1
ERF167024
Project Information:
RegenCo BCHM Northern Aggregation #1 is a Beef Cattle Herd Management (BCHM) project operating as an aggregation across the northern rangelands of Australia. Registered in February 2022, the project encompasses pastoral properties in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, specifically targeting the regions around Katherine (NT) and the East Kimberley (WA).
The project brings together multiple cattle stations under a single administrative umbrella to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. The land use in these regions is primarily extensive beef cattle grazing on native pastures. The environment is characterized by a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons; rainfall is summer-dominant, often exceeding 800mm annually in the northern extents, while soils typically range from red earths (Kandosols) to cracking clays (Vertosols) on the floodplains.
The Beef Cattle Herd Management method credits projects for reducing the emissions intensity of beef production, essentially producing the same amount of beef with fewer greenhouse gas emissions. This project achieves this by implementing activities such as altering herd ratios to increase liveweight gain, reducing the average age of the herd, and culling unproductive animals to improve overall herd efficiency.
An interesting aspect of this project is its "aggregated" structure, which allows the proponent, RegenCo Pty Ltd, to group multiple landholders together. This reduces the administrative burden for individual pastoralists and streamlines the reporting of carbon abatement across the vast pastoral leases of Northern Australia.
