Makin Carbon Project - Breust 2

Makin Carbon Project - Breust 2 is a soil carbon project located in the Temora local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, approximately 90km north of the major regional city of Wagga Wagga. It was registered in August 2021 and covers 264.05 hectares.

Soil carbon projects registered under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models Methodology (2021) involve implementing new or materially different agricultural management activities to increase the amount of carbon stored within the soil. The carbon sequestration is estimated by taking physical baseline measurements and comparing them with subsequent testing and modelling over time.

The Temora region is a highly productive agricultural hub known predominantly for dryland broadacre farming, such as wheat and canola cropping, as well as sheep grazing. The area experiences a medium-to-low rainfall climate typical of the Western Slopes, and soils in the region are generally composed of sodosols and red-brown earths.

This project aims to increase soil carbon in the agricultural system by addressing material soil deficiencies through the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers, retaining crop stubble after harvests, and converting from intensive tillage practices to reduced or no-tillage practices. An additional point of interest is that on July 24, 2024, the project completed a method variation, successfully transitioning from the older 2018 Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration determination to the updated 2021 Estimation and Models methodology.
