Project Information:
Evatt Carbon Project - Breust 1 is a soil carbon project located approximately 21km west of Temora in the Riverina region of New South Wales. It was registered in September 2021 and covers 242.61ha.
Soil carbon projects operating under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology involve changing agricultural land management practices to build soil organic carbon. Standard requirements include establishing a baseline through direct soil sampling and estimating carbon stock changes over time using a combination of ongoing measurements and modelling.
The Temora area is widely known for mixed farming operations, particularly winter cereal cropping (such as wheat and canola) and sheep grazing. The area is considered to have a temperate climate with moderate rainfall of around 530mm annually, and the soils are generally Red Chromosols (red-brown earths), which are highly valued for agricultural production.
This project aims to increase carbon in the soil by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material deficiencies, converting from intensive to reduced or no-tillage practices, and retaining crop stubble after harvest. Managed by Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd, the project successfully transitioned to the updated 2021 methodology from the older 2018 determination in July 2024. Interestingly, the "Breust" name in the project title reflects a prominent local farming family, famously shared by former Hawthorn AFL premiership player Luke Breust who grew up in Temora. According to the carbonFAIR platform, the project sequesters an estimated 86 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year and has already been issued 2,334 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
