Native woodland regeneration project WOO21

Project Information:

Native woodland regeneration project WOO21 is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Mulga Lands bioregion of South West Queensland, approximately 45km east of the rural town of Wyandra. Registered in August 2021, the project covers a substantial area of 25,876 hectares on a property known as "Woodlands".

Human-Induced Regeneration projects focus on restoring native forest cover through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources. Rather than planting new trees, landholders implement management changes, such as managing the timing and extent of grazing or ceasing mechanical clearing, to allow suppressed vegetation to regenerate into forest status.

The Mulga Lands region is historically dominated by rangeland grazing for sheep and cattle. The environment is semi-arid with variable, often low rainfall, and the landscape typically features red earth or sandy loam soils supporting vegetation such as Mulga (Acacia aneura) and Poplar Box.

A notable aspect of this project is its connection to the voluntary corporate offset market. The project is managed with the involvement of Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM), a major Australian carbon offset provider. Public disclosure documents indicate that credits from this project (specifically the "Woodlands Property") have been retired to support carbon neutral claims for corporate entities such as Slattery Australia. Additionally, the project has committed to a 100-year permanence period, ensuring the sequestered carbon remains stored for a century, which is the highest standard for permanence under the ACCU scheme.
