White Mountain Carbon Project

Project Information:
White Mountain Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Upper Murray region, approximately 12 kilometers east of Corryong in northeastern Victoria. Registered in August 2021, the project covers 214.8 hectares of agricultural land situated near the Murray River, which forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales. The property operates within the Towong Shire, an area renowned for its picturesque valleys and high-productivity grazing land.
The project operates under the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology. This method requires landholders to implement new management activities, such as pasture rejuvenation, altered stocking densities, or the application of nutrients, to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. In this specific instance, the project activities focus on re-establishing or rejuvenating pasture by seeding, a practice designed to improve root depth and biomass, thereby drawing more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile. Credits are issued based on measured increases in soil carbon stocks over time compared to a baseline.
Regionally, the Upper Murray is characterized by a temperate climate with reliable, high rainfall, typically ranging from 700mm to over 1200mm annually in the foothills. The terrain is a mix of alluvial river flats and undulating granitic slopes, supporting robust beef and dairy cattle industries. The soils in the river valleys are generally fertile alluvial loams and clays, while the slopes often feature sandy or clay loams derived from granite. These conditions are highly favourable for soil carbon projects, as moisture availability is a key driver for sequestration. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer known for utilizing digital soil mapping and "Tags for Tonnes" financing models to streamline participation for graziers.
