Project Information:

Tamala Park Landfill Gas Power Station Upgrade Project is a landfill gas capture and combustion project located at the Tamala Park Waste Management Facility, approximately 35km north of Perth in Western Australia. Registered on May 27, 2021, the project operates within a region characterised by urban development and waste management infrastructure, situated immediately south of the suburb of Clarkson and north of Kinross.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology incentivises the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas generated by decomposing organic waste, that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. The captured gas is combusted to generate electricity. As an "Upgrade" project, it specifically focuses on improvements to the existing gas collection efficiency or capacity to capture gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste.

Environmentally, the Tamala Park site sits on the Swan Coastal Plain, which is defined by sandy soils overlying limestone formations. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The site itself is a significant waste management hub for the Mindarie Regional Council, though it is surrounded by expanding residential zones, which has historically led to community engagement regarding odour management.

The project is operated in conjunction with Energy Developments Limited (EDL), with the proponent listed as Landfill Gas & Power Pty Ltd. Interesting notes about the facility include its status as the largest landfill gas power station in Western Australia, with a generation capacity of approximately 6MW, enough to power thousands of local homes. The facility processes gas from millions of tonnes of waste and is currently in its final phase of landfilling (Phase III), with progressive capping and revegetation efforts underway.
