Project Information:

The Tamala Park Landfill Gas Power Station Upgrade Project is a waste-to-energy initiative located in the northern Perth suburb of Mindarie, approximately 35 kilometers north of the Perth CBD in Western Australia. Registered in May 2021, the project upgrades an existing landfill gas collection system at the Tamala Park Waste Management Facility, which serves the Mindarie Regional Council area. The facility is situated within the Swan Coastal Plain, a region characterized by sandy soils, specifically the Spearwood and Quindalup dune systems, and a Mediterranean climate featuring hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology rewards project developers for capturing methane (a potent greenhouse gas released during the decomposition of organic waste) and combusting it to generate electricity. By converting methane into carbon dioxide and useful energy, the project significantly reduces the global warming potential of the emissions. The electricity generated is typically fed into the local grid, displacing fossil-fuel-based power.

A notable feature of this project is its integration with one of Western Australia's largest landfill gas power stations. Operated by Energy Developments (EDL) through the proponent Landfill Gas & Power Pty Ltd, the station has a generation capacity of approximately 6 megawatts (MW), sufficient to power around 6,000 homes. The project is critical for managing emissions at the site, especially as the landfill approaches its projected operational closure around 2028. The site has also been the subject of significant community interest regarding odour management, highlighting the environmental importance of efficient gas capture systems.
