Fenton Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Fenton Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Ovens Valley region of Victoria, approximately 5km northwest of Myrtleford near the locality of Gapsted. Registered in April 2021, the project covers nearly 132 hectares of agricultural land. The region is well-regarded for its fertile alluvial valleys and high rainfall, supporting a mix of grazing, viticulture, and forestry operations.

This project operates under the 2021 "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" methodology. Unlike earlier methods that relied solely on physical soil sampling, this hybrid approach allows the proponent, Agriprove Solutions, to use approved models (such as FullCAM or RothC) alongside physical measurement to estimate carbon stock changes. This reduces the cost of monitoring over time.

The project activities focus on increasing soil carbon stocks by re-establishing or rejuvenating pasture through seeding and applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies. By improving pasture health and root density, the project aims to draw down atmospheric carbon into the soil profile. The local environment, characterized by clay loam soils and consistent rainfall in the Alpine Valleys, provides favorable conditions for such pasture-based carbon farming.
