Tarmoola Station Regeneration Project

Project Information:

Tarmoola Station Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located at Tarmoola Station, approximately 28km north-west of Leonora in Western Australia. It was registered in March 2021 and covers an expansive 171,879.97 hectares.

Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) projects generate carbon credits by changing land management practices to allow native forests to regrow on land where vegetation has been previously suppressed for at least 10 years. Standard requirements include implementing eligible activities, such as managing the timing and extent of grazing or controlling feral animals, to help the forest reach and maintain a permanent canopy cover.

The Leonora region is situated in a semi-arid climate known for low and unreliable rainfall, averaging around 229mm annually. The environment features stony and hard-pan red earth soils that typically support mulga woodlands and open shrublands. Regionally, the land is predominantly used for pastoral grazing, specifically cattle and sheep, as well as extensive gold mining operations.

This project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers, on land that was previously cleared. Interestingly, the project's pastoral lease intersects with local mining activities; the lease was recently sold by Asra Minerals to Vault Minerals (via Greenstone Resources (WA) Pty Ltd) for $3 million. This transaction aimed to consolidate regional assets like the nearby King of the Hills mine and support gold exploration programs, all while the carbon project continues its operations. The project has seen a few participant variations, originally registering under NEXT HORIZON 888 MANAGEMENT PTY LTD, transitioning to Tarmoola Holdings Pty Ltd in late 2022, and officially varying to GREENSTONE RESOURCES (WA) PTY LTD in April 2026.
