Widgiwah Planting Project

Project Information:
Widgiwah Planting Project is an environmental planting project located in the Trawool Valley area, approximately 15 kilometers east of Seymour in central Victoria. Registered in January 2021, the project covers a net area of 367 hectares on land that was historically used for agricultural purposes, such as grazing, for at least five years prior to commencement. The project is managed by LRX Projects Pty Ltd, following a proponent variation from the Lisa Jane Mount Rose Trust in late 2023.
The project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology (FullCAM). This method requires the establishment of permanent plantings of native tree and shrub species, such as eucalypts and acacias indigenous to the local area, at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover (typically a potential height of at least 2 meters and 20% canopy cover). The goal is to sequester carbon in the biomass of the growing trees while enhancing local biodiversity.
The Trawool and Seymour region is characterized by a temperate climate with moderate rainfall, averaging roughly 600mm to 700mm annually. The landscape in this specific area often features granitic sandy loam soils, owing to the nearby granite outcrops of the Tallarook Ranges, as well as duplex soils in the valley floors. These conditions are generally favorable for the regeneration of native sclerophyll forests.
Notably, the project engages Covalent Land Australia as a participant/agent, a firm capable of scaling environmental plantings to support corporate net-zero targets. The project's "permanence period" has not yet commenced, indicating the forest is likely still in its establishment phase. A variation in December 2023 removed certain areas from the project, likely refining the boundary to exclude unsuitable land or infrastructure.
