Stewart Carbon Project

Project Information:
The Stewart Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Specifically, the project is situated near the small town of Walbundrie, approximately 50 kilometers northwest of the major regional city of Albury. Registered in November 2020, the project encompasses a land area of roughly 115 hectares.
Operating under the 2018 Soil Carbon methodology, this project seeks to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by measuring increases in soil organic carbon over time compared to a baseline. The specific activity undertaken for this project involves altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing. By optimizing how livestock interact with the pasture, the project aims to improve ground cover and root biomass, which in turn facilitates the sequestration of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the soil.
The project is located within the Greater Hume Shire, a region heavily utilized for mixed farming, including sheep and cattle grazing as well as dryland cropping of wheat and canola. The local environment is characterized by a temperate climate with a winter-dominant rainfall averaging approximately 550mm to 600mm annually. The soils in this area are typically Red Chromosols (often called red-brown earths) or Sodosols; these are clay-loam texture-contrast soils that are widely considered the "workhorse" soils of NSW agriculture but can benefit significantly from regenerative management to improve structure and carbon content.
The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian market known for utilizing digital technology and soil testing to streamline participation in the carbon farming scheme.
