Boorook Carbon Project

Project Information:
Boorook Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located near Mortlake in the Western District of Victoria, approximately 50km north of the coastal city of Warrnambool. Registered in February 2021, the project covers a significant area of approximately 2,060 hectares.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits the increase of soil organic carbon stocks resulting from new or materially different land management activities. In this specific instance, the project activities involve applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, integrated with broader pasture management strategies. The project area is situated on the Victorian Volcanic Plains, a region characterized by fertile basalt soils and reliable, winter-dominant rainfall, making it highly suitable for high-density beef cattle grazing.
A notable aspect of this project is the involvement of the proponents, the Allen family, who are recognized as "Flagship Farmers" for McDonald's. They have managed the "Boorook" property for over a century and utilize the carbon project as part of a holistic system to produce low-carbon beef. Their approach combines high-density rotational grazing with soil improvement techniques to enhance productivity while sequestering carbon.
