Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site #14 (Revoked)

Project Information:

Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site #14 (Revoked) was a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the remote rangelands of the Shire of Ashburton, approximately 160km south of Onslow, Western Australia. Registered on November 13, 2020, the project covered a vast area of 124,974 hectares. The project was voluntarily revoked on January 17, 2023, under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, which allows proponents to withdraw projects, often for administrative restructuring or landholder agreement reasons.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects in this region focus on restoring native forest cover by ceasing suppression activities. In this context, the primary activities involved managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing and controlling feral animals (such as goats) to allow native vegetation to regenerate from in-situ seed sources like rootstock and lignotubers.

The project was situated in the Gascoyne-Ashburton region, an area characterized by a semi-arid to arid climate with low and variable rainfall (typically averaging 200–250mm annually). The landscape is dominated by pastoral leases used for cattle and sheep grazing. The soils in this vicinity are generally red sandy earths (often referred to as Pindan soils), loams, and alluvial claypans, which support acacia shrublands and scattered eucalypt woodlands.

An interesting aspect of this project is its inclusion in a broader portfolio by Terra Carbon Pty Limited, titled the "Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative," which comprises multiple numbered sites across the state's pastoral regions. The revocation of Site #14 suggests it may have been consolidated into another project or withdrawn due to specific site-based feasibility assessments.
