Wriedt Carbon Project - Lockrey
ERF153837
Project Information:
Wriedt Carbon Project - Lockrey is a soil carbon sequestration project located in Nunamara, approximately 15km east of Launceston in northern Tasmania. Registered on April 2, 2022, the project covers a project area of 51.26 hectares. The region is characterized by a mix of grazing land and forestry operations, situated within the foothills of Mount Barrow and the North Esk River catchment.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon Methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This methodology allows landholders to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by adopting new management activities that increase soil organic carbon levels. For this specific project, the proponent, AgriProve Solutions, is working with the landholder to alter the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing. These changes are designed to improve soil vegetation cover and soil health, thereby sequestering more carbon in the ground compared to historical baselines.
Environmentally, the Nunamara region experiences a cool temperate climate with reliable rainfall, typically averaging between 700mm and 900mm annually, slightly higher than the Launceston city basin due to its elevation and proximity to the Eastern Tiers. The soils in the North Esk valley are generally fertile, often consisting of alluvial clay loams on the flats and podzolic or gradational soils on the surrounding slopes, making them well-suited for high-density grazing when managed effectively.
AgriProve, the project proponent, is Australia's largest soil carbon developer and often utilizes specific pasture renovation techniques to accelerate carbon build-up. While this project is distinct from AgriProve's demonstration site at Carrick, it is part of a growing cluster of soil carbon initiatives in Tasmania's northern agricultural districts.
