Project Information:

Mugga Lane Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas capture and electricity generation project located at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre in Symonston, approximately 10km south of the Canberra CBD in the Australian Capital Territory. It was registered by LGI Limited in June 2020 and covers the waste cells of the existing landfill site.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology allows proponents to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by upgrading or installing systems to capture and combust methane (a potent greenhouse gas) generated from decomposing organic waste, turning it into renewable electricity and thereby displacing fossil-fuel grid power.

The peri-urban Symonston area surrounding the project serves as a light industrial and rural buffer zone, primarily utilised for the territory's major waste management and resource recovery operations. The Canberra region features a temperate climate with relatively even rainfall year-round, averaging roughly 600mm annually. Local soils in this area are typically characterised by heavy, clay-based Kurosols and Chromosols, alongside shallow rocky profiles on the slopes.

Since its commencement, this project has upgraded an existing landfill gas collection system to capture gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste. LGI Limited has made significant enhancements to the site, expanding the initial 4-megawatt (MW) power station to 6MW in 2024 with a 20MW grid connection. This allows the project to power over 10,800 local homes annually. The site is also undergoing further upgrades to integrate a 12MW battery energy storage system (BESS), ensuring the facility provides firm and flexible dispatchable renewable power to help stabilise the local electricity grid.
