Project Information:

WeAct Plantations Tasmania #2 (Revoked) was a plantation forestry project located near Barrington, approximately 25km south of Devonport in northern Tasmania. Registered in March 2019, the project covered a relatively small area of 40 hectares situated within the productive agricultural landscape of the North West Coast. The project was revoked in May 2022 following a restructure under section 57 of the Carbon Farming Initiative Act 2011, a process that often involves consolidating or altering project boundaries rather than a simple cancellation.

The region surrounding Barrington and Sheffield is characterized by intensive agriculture and forestry, supported by high annual rainfall exceeding 1,000mm. The project area sits on fertile Tertiary basalt soils (often known locally as krasnozems or red ferrosols), which are highly prized for their depth and structure, supporting both dairy pastures and timber plantations.

This project operated under the Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically utilizing the schedule for converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation plantations. In practice, this involves transitioning a forest originally managed for quick-turnaround products like woodchips (pulp logs) into a regime managed for high-quality sawlogs. By extending the harvest cycle and thinning the trees to encourage diameter growth, the average carbon stock on the land increases significantly over time compared to the original baseline.
