Varanus Island Control System and Process Improvement (Revoked)
ERF130290
Project Information:
Varanus Island Control System and Process Improvement (Revoked) was an industrial energy efficiency project located on Varanus Island, approximately 75 kilometers offshore from the Pilbara coast in Western Australia. The project was situated roughly 125 kilometers northwest of Karratha, a major resource city in the region. Registered in March 2019 and subsequently revoked in February 2022, the project was managed by Santos WA Energy Limited. The island itself serves a dual purpose: it is a Class C Nature Reserve (part of the Lowendal Islands) and a significant industrial hub for gathering and processing oil and gas from the North West Shelf.
The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Industrial Electricity and Fuel Efficiency) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits abatement generated by improving the energy efficiency of industrial equipment, such as upgrading control systems, boilers, or electricity generators. By optimizing how energy-consuming equipment is controlled or operated, proponents can reduce fuel combustion or electricity use, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions relative to a historical baseline.
Varanus Island is characterized by an arid, subtropical climate typical of the Pilbara region, often subject to cyclones during the summer months. The terrain consists primarily of limestone and sandy soils, supporting low coastal vegetation that serves as an important breeding ground for seabirds, including wedge-tailed shearwaters.
The project was voluntarily revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule, which typically occurs when a proponent decides not to proceed with the crediting period or the project is no longer viable, often before any carbon credits are issued. The project activities focused on "control systems and process improvement," which aligns with broader upgrades at the facility known as the Varanus Island Compression and Power Optimisation Project (VICPOP). This initiative aimed to install additional gas compression and power generation capacity to maintain production rates while managing energy consumption.
