Turkey Hill carbon sequestration. (Revoked)

Project Information:

Turkey Hill Carbon Sequestration (Revoked) was an environmental planting project located roughly 25km north of Crookwell in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. The project area, situated near Turkey Hill Road in the locality of Limerick, covered approximately 16.9 hectares. It was registered in December 2018 under the Emissions Reduction Fund but was voluntarily revoked in December 2024.

The region surrounding Crookwell is characterized by rolling hills and is predominantly utilized for grazing sheep and cattle. The environment is cool temperate with a relatively high annual rainfall of approximately 800mm, supporting rich basalt and clay soils (Chromosols and Kurosols) that are ideal for pasture and forestry. Greenfleet, the project proponent, established the site to demonstrate how reforestation could integrate with agricultural land to improve productivity and biodiversity.

The project operated under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This method involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land previously cleared for agriculture. The "FullCAM" designation refers to the use of the Full Carbon Accounting Model to estimate carbon sequestration over time. While the project is now revoked from the ACCU scheme, Greenfleet typically retains the physical forests for their own carbon offset programs, meaning the trees likely remain in situ despite the project's regulatory cancellation.
