245 Avonmore Road Bindi Carbon Forestry Project

Project Information:

The 245 Avonmore Road Bindi Carbon Forestry Project is a reforestation initiative located in the rural locality of Bindi, approximately 18 kilometers northeast of Swifts Creek in the East Gippsland region of Victoria. Registered in October 2018, the project originally covered 541.58 hectares, though a variation in December 2024 indicates adjustments to the project area, likely to refine the carbon estimation boundaries. The site is situated in a valley environment typical of the Australian high country, featuring steep to undulating terrain that transitions onto creek flats.

Operating under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology, the project involves establishing permanent native forests on land previously cleared for agricultural use, historically grazing for beef cattle. The specific method requires planting mixed native species (such as local eucalypts) at densities sufficient to achieve forest cover, using the Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM) to estimate the carbon sequestered over a 25-year crediting period. The project has a 100-year permanence period, meaning the trees must remain protected for a century.

The Bindi region is characterized by a cool temperate climate with a mean annual rainfall of approximately 670mm, providing reliable conditions for tree establishment compared to more arid carbon farming zones. The local geology is distinct for the "Bindi Limestone" deposits, though soils in the immediate project area are likely a mix of colluvial loams on slopes and alluvial clays on the flats. Publicly available information connects this project to the "Treechange" initiative, a model where surplus carbon credits (ACCUs) are voluntarily retired on behalf of individual sponsors to offset their personal footprints, rather than solely sold to industrial polluters.
