Trophy Carbon Project

Project Information:

Trophy Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 15km north-west of Kaniva in the West Wimmera region of Victoria. It was registered in July 2018 and currently covers an area of 116.09 hectares.

Soil carbon projects under the 2021 Measurement and Models methodology involve building soil organic carbon levels in agricultural systems by implementing eligible new land management activities. Standard requirements for this method include establishing a baseline and estimating changes in soil organic carbon content through rigorous direct soil sampling and laboratory analysis, or by using approved models.

The West Wimmera area around Kaniva is heavily utilised for agricultural production, particularly broadacre cropping (such as wheat, barley, and canola) and sheep grazing operations. The region typically experiences a Mediterranean-style climate with semi-arid to moderate annual rainfall averaging between 350mm and 450mm. Local soils are highly variable, generally consisting of Wimmera self-mulching clays, sodic red soils, and deep sands.

This project increases carbon in the soil by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material deficiencies, re-establishing pastures through seeding or pasture cropping, and altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to improve soil health and vegetation cover. The project operates with a nominated 25-year permanence period. An interesting note is that the project has undergone several administrative updates to ensure optimization, including a reduction in its registered area in late 2024, a participant name change to AGRIPROVE SOLUTIONS PTY LTD in September 2025, and a transition from the older 2014 soil carbon methodology to the updated 2021 determination in October 2025.
