Catchment Conservation Alliance - Great Barrier Reef Initiative Site #4 (Revoked)

Project Information:

Catchment Conservation Alliance - Great Barrier Reef Initiative Site #4 (Revoked) was a carbon sequestration project located in the Banana Shire and North Burnett regions of Central Queensland, approximately 15km south of Biloela and extending towards the Monto district. Registered in June 2018 and covering 1,515 hectares, the project was managed by Terra Carbon Pty Limited (a GreenCollar company). On August 20, 2025, the project was revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates a voluntary revocation by the proponent where no Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) had been issued.

The project operated under the Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) methodology. This method involves allowing native forests to regenerate on land where vegetation has been suppressed for at least 10 years, typically by grazing or mechanical clearing. To generate credits, proponents must undertake specific management activities, such as installing fencing, controlling feral animals, or reducing livestock stocking density, to permit the return of a permanent, even-aged native forest.

Regionally, the project area lies within the Fitzroy Basin, a catchment critical to the Great Barrier Reef. The landscape is dominated by beef cattle grazing and dryland cropping. The environment is characterized by a sub-tropical to semi-arid climate with summer-dominant rainfall averaging between 600mm and 700mm annually. Soils in the Callide and Burnett valleys are typically fertile cracking clays (black earths) on alluvial plains, transitioning to massive earths and duplex soils on the ridges.

An interesting aspect of this project was its inclusion in the wider "Catchment Conservation Alliance" initiative, designed to stack environmental benefits by improving water quality for the Great Barrier Reef while sequestering carbon. The voluntary revocation suggests the project may have been consolidated into another site, deemed unviable, or the landholder opted out before the crediting period commenced.
