Project Information:

Bega Valley Shire LFG Project is a landfill gas (LFG) capture project located at the Central Waste Facility in Frogs Hollow, approximately 15km south of Bega in New South Wales. Registered in February 2018, the project is operated by LGI Limited in partnership with the Bega Valley Shire Council. It focuses on the abatement of greenhouse gases from the shire's primary waste management site.

Landfill gas projects involve installing a network of vertical wells and horizontal pipes into the waste mass to vacuum methane generated by decomposing organic matter. Under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015 (and its subsequent 2021 variation), this captured gas is combusted, converting potent methane into carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower global warming potential. This project specifically involves the installation of a new collection system and a specialized flare to manage gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste streams.

The Bega Valley region is characterized by a temperate coastal climate with moderate to high rainfall, creating an environment that supports significant dairy farming, grazing, and forestry operations. The local soil landscape is often dominated by decomposed granite and metasedimentary soils, which can influence drainage and site management. A notable feature of this project is its additionality; the site is a smaller regional landfill with no prior regulatory requirement to capture biogas. Consequently, the generation of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) was the primary economic driver that made the installation of the abatement infrastructure commercially viable.
