Gunderson Carbon (Revoked)

Project Information:

Gunderson Carbon (Revoked) is a soil carbon project located in the South Gippsland region of Victoria, approximately 7 kilometers north of the town of Korumburra and south of Poowong. Registered in July 2017, the project covered an area of roughly 97 hectares. The surrounding region features rolling green hills and is predominantly utilized for high-productivity agriculture, specifically dairy farming and beef cattle grazing, owing to its lush pastures.

The project operated under the Sequestering Carbon in Soils in Grazing Systems (2014) methodology. This method credits abatement by measuring increases in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks resulting from changes in land management. Typical activities include altering stocking densities, implementing rotational grazing, or improving pasture composition to encourage root growth and carbon storage. As the project was revoked in August 2024 under Section 30 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015, this indicates a voluntary revocation by the proponent, Corporate Carbon Solutions.

Environmentally, the project area sits within a high-rainfall zone, with the region typically receiving over 900mm of rain annually. The soils in this part of South Gippsland are generally fertile, often characterized as deep red Ferrosols (volcanic clay-loams) or Grey Dermosols, which are highly conducive to pasture growth and, consequently, soil carbon sequestration. The revocation after seven years suggests the project may not have met abatement projections or was withdrawn to potentially transition to a newer methodology.
