Bimblebox Regeneration Project
ERF105188
Project Information:
The Bimblebox Regeneration Project (ERF105188) is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located approximately 20km southwest of the township of Eulo and roughly 80km west of Cunnamulla in South West Queensland. Registered on November 9, 2016, the project covers a substantial area of 15,941 hectares. The region is primarily defined by pastoral leasehold land used for grazing sheep and cattle, situated within the Paroo Shire local government area.
Human-Induced Regeneration projects focus on restoring native forest cover on land where vegetation has been suppressed for at least 10 years, typically by grazing or mechanical clearing. Unlike Environmental Planting projects which require active tree planting (often at densities like 200 stems per hectare), HIR projects rely on "assisted regeneration" from in-situ seed sources, rootstock, or lignotubers. The project's standard requirement is to manage the land in a way that allows this native vegetation to regenerate naturally and eventually achieve forest cover status (defined as 20% crown cover and a height of at least 2 meters).
The environment in the Paroo Shire is classified as semi-arid to arid, with highly variable rainfall averaging between 300mm and 350mm annually. The landscape is dominated by Mulga (Acacia aneura) shrublands and Poplar Box (Eucalyptus populnea) woodlands, the latter tree is commonly known as "Bimblebox," which likely gives the project its name. The soils in this region are typically red earths, sandy loams, and clays suited to these resilient native species but sensitive to overgrazing.
An interesting distinction for this project is its name. While it shares the name "Bimblebox" with the famous Bimblebox Nature Refuge (known for its legal battle against the Galilee Basin coal mines), that refuge is located over 500km to the north near Alpha, Queensland. This carbon project is a distinct operation run by proponents Jacob and Christine Berghofer, in partnership with service provider Climate Friendly Pty Ltd, focusing on regenerating vegetation in the Mulga Lands bioregion.
