Mildool Native Forest Protection Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Mildool Native Forest Protection Project (Revoked) was a vegetation project located approximately 10km northeast of the small locality of Angledool and roughly 70km north of Lightning Ridge in northern New South Wales. Registered in March 2016, the project covered a substantial area of 10,539 hectares within the Walgett Shire. The project operated for nearly a decade before being voluntarily revoked in July 2025.

The project operated under the Avoided Deforestation 1.1 methodology, a determination designed to protect native forests that otherwise had legal approval to be cleared. To be eligible, the landholder must have held a clearing permit issued before 1 July 2010, typically an Invasive Native Scrub (INS) Property Vegetation Plan. Instead of exercising the right to clear the land for cropping or improved grazing, the project proponent committed to retaining the forest, thereby preventing the release of stored carbon. The carbon credits (ACCUs) generated represented the emissions avoided by keeping the trees standing.

The region surrounding the project area is semi-arid, characterized by hot summers and variable rainfall averaging between 400mm and 500mm annually. Land use in this district is predominantly extensive grazing for sheep and cattle. The landscape typically features a mix of red earth ridges, often associated with the "dool" suffix in local place names referring to stony features or waterholes, and grey clay (Vertosol) floodplains typical of the Walgett region.

Managed by Terra Carbon Pty Limited, a subsidiary of the major environmental markets developer GreenCollar, the project was part of a broader portfolio of avoided deforestation assets in western NSW. The project's status as "revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule" indicates a voluntary revocation, meaning the project proponent applied to the regulator to cancel the project, likely after relinquishing any necessary credits or concluding the project's crediting period.
