Project Information:

Kimbriki Resource Recovery Project - FOGO Line (Revoked) was an aggregated waste diversion project located at the Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre in Ingleside, approximately 25km north of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales. Registered in April 2016, the project was intended to operate within the existing waste precinct, which sits adjacent to Garigal National Park and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. The region is characterized by the high rainfall typical of the Sydney Basin and features sandy loam soils derived from the underlying Hawkesbury Sandstone.

The project was designed to utilize the Source Separated Organic Waste methodology. This method involves diverting organic material, specifically Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) in this case, away from general landfill cells. Instead of decaying anaerobically in a landfill and generating methane, the waste is separated at the point of generation and transferred to a specialized processing unit. For this project, the proponent planned to use enclosed composting technology to treat the waste, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Operated by Kimbriki Environmental Enterprises Pty Ltd (majority-owned by Northern Beaches Council) with support from Mike Ritchie and Associates, the project was revoked in June 2020 under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, and its carbon abatement contract was terminated in 2017. This revocation typically indicates that the specific facility upgrade or carbon auditing process did not proceed as originally planned under the Emissions Reduction Fund. While the specific carbon project was cancelled, the Kimbriki site remains a major waste and recycling facility serving the Northern Beaches region.
