Narrandool Native Forest Protection Project

Project Information:

Narrandool Native Forest Protection Project is an Avoided Deforestation project located at the "Narrandool" property, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the opal-mining town of Lightning Ridge in northern New South Wales. Registered in March 2016, the project encompasses 4,387 hectares of native vegetation within the Walgett Shire. The property appears to be situated along the Narran River system, a region characterized by extensive grazing, dryland cropping, and significant waterhole refuges.

The project operates under the Avoided Deforestation 1.1 methodology. This specific classification is designed for landholders who hold a distinct clearing consent issued before 1 July 2010, allowing them to legally clear native forest for agricultural use (such as pasture or crops). By voluntarily surrendering this right and protecting the forest instead, the project generates carbon credits for the emissions avoided. The forest is maintained to prevent conversion to agricultural systems, preserving the carbon stock stored in the biomass.

Environmentally, the region is classified as semi-arid with a summer-dominant rainfall pattern, averaging around 470mm annually. The landscape typically features flat alluvial floodplains dominated by Grey Vertosols (cracking clays) near watercourses like the Narran River, transitioning to Red Chromosols and ridges of claystone in surrounding areas. The project proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited, is a subsidiary of the major environmental markets developer GreenCollar.
