Granville Forest Regeneration Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

Granville Forest Regeneration Project (Revoked) was a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located at Granville Station, approximately 53km northeast of the township of Quilpie in South West Queensland. The project was registered in June 2016 and covered a substantial area of 49,303 hectares. However, the project had a very short active lifespan, as it was voluntarily revoked in November 2016, less than five months after its initial registration.

The project operated under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves implementing land management changes to facilitate the regrowth of native forests. Standard activities for this project type include ceasing the mechanical or chemical suppression of vegetation and managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing. To generate credits, the project would have been required to demonstrate that the suppression of regrowth had occurred for at least 10 years prior to the project's commencement and that the new management activities would allow the forest to reach a permanent canopy cover.

Regionally, the area falls within the Mulga Lands bioregion, which is characterized by semi-arid conditions and generally low, variable rainfall. The landscape is dominated by Mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands on red earth and loamy soils. The primary land use in this district is grazing for sheep and cattle, which aligns with the project's intent to manage grazing pressure to allow for forest regeneration.

A notable aspect of this project is its revocation under Section 32 of the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Act. Section 32 allows for the voluntary revocation of a project by the proponent. This often occurs if the project is deemed unviable, if there are changes in land ownership, or if the proponent wishes to reconfigure the project area or methodology. Given the short timeframe between registration and revocation, it is likely that the project did not generate any Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) before it was cancelled.
