Limbunya & Maryfield Stations (Revoked)
ERF103014
Project Information:
Limbunya & Maryfield Stations (Revoked) was a Savanna Fire Management project located across two distinct and extensive cattle properties in the Northern Territory. The project area, totaling approximately 671,179 hectares, covered Limbunya Station in the Victoria River District, about 650km southwest of Katherine near the Western Australian border, and Maryfield Station, situated roughly 200km southeast of Katherine near Larrimah on the Stuart Highway. Registered in February 2016 and revoked in August 2017, the project had a brief operational lifespan before its carbon abatement contract was terminated.
The project operated under the 2015 Savanna Fire Management determination, which incentivizes strategic early dry season burning. By conducting cool, controlled burns early in the dry season (typically April to July), land managers reduce the fuel load available for high-intensity, uncontrolled wildfires in the late dry season. This practice significantly lowers the emission of methane and nitrous oxide. The project area spans the transition between the tropical savanna high rainfall zone (>1000mm) and the semi-arid low rainfall zone (600–1000mm), featuring a mix of rugged gorges and spinifex country at Limbunya, and flat, fertile red earths and black cracking clay soils (Vertosols) at Maryfield.
Land use in the region is almost exclusively pastoral, focused on large-scale beef cattle grazing. Following the revocation of this specific project, both stations have remained high-profile assets in the Australian agricultural sector. Maryfield was held by North Star Pastoral for many years, while Limbunya has a storied history with the Vestey Group and later the Bundey family. In recent years (circa 2022), both properties were acquired by Wealthcheck, with operations leased to AAM Investment Group, and have since been assessed for different carbon methodologies, such as Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR).
