Limbunya & Maryfield Stations (Revoked)
ERF103014
Project Information:
Limbunya & Maryfield Stations (Revoked) was a Savanna Fire Management project located across two distinct and geographically separated pastoral leases in the Northern Territory. Limbunya Station is situated in the Victoria River District, approximately 650km south-west of Katherine and near the Western Australian border. In contrast, Maryfield Station is located roughly 200km south-east of Katherine, near Larrimah on the edge of the Barkly Tableland. Registered in February 2016 and revoked in August 2017, the project covered a massive combined area of approximately 671,179 hectares.
The project operated under the Savanna Fire Management methodology. This method involves strategic hazard reduction burns conducted during the early dry season (cooler months) to reduce the fuel load. By doing so, landholders aim to prevent or minimize the intensity of late dry season wildfires, which release significantly more greenhouse gases (methane and nitrous oxide).
The environmental conditions across the two properties vary due to their distance from one another. Limbunya Station is defined by the semi-arid monsoonal climate of the Victoria River District, featuring rugged terrain, basalt-derived black soil plains, and cracking clays with an average annual rainfall of around 547mm. Maryfield Station, situated in the higher rainfall zone (approx. 850mm+) of the Sturt Plateau/Roper region, is characterized by flat terrain with red earth and sandy loam soils supporting improved pastures.
A notable aspect of this project is its revocation history. The project was revoked under Section 33 of the CFI Act (Voluntary Revocation) in 2017, following the lapse of its Carbon Abatement Contract. The proponent, Country Carbon Pty. Ltd., later entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the Clean Energy Regulator in 2020 regarding statutory compliance. Since the revocation, both stations have been sold by North Star Pastoral to new investment interests (Wealthcheck and AAM Investment Group) and have subsequently been approved for new, separate carbon projects, including Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) schemes.
